2026 is Poised to Be Hailed as the Year of the Frog Game.
While I found the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
A surprising total of five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these hoppy characters. Given that a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are staking their claim.
A Legacy of Leaping
Amphibians have been far from new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. Yet, their popularity has seemingly exploded in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are legitimate amphibian adventures.
Tracking the Tadpole Trend
To understand this trend, I performed a thorough analysis into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My methodology was somewhat arbitrary, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.
The results tell a compelling story: a consistent rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's rising status in the broader culture is partially visible elsewhere, such as the revival of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. Yet, the wave in gaming seems particularly pronounced.
Designing for a Sticky Tongue
In my opinion, this is a trend I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs have inherent appealing traits for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as memorable characters that often become a fan favorite in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their long tongues and sticky tongues lend themselves to a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.
A number of the announced projects smartly employ these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance
So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the potential for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.
When these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase often do—we might just be entering a true frog gaming renaissance.
