Alphabet Commits $15bn to Build AI Computing Facility in India
Alphabet, Google's holding company Alphabet is set to invest $15 billion to establish an artificial intelligence data center in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
The facility, which will be set up in the port city of the city of Visakhapatnam, is going to be a segment of the worldwide network of Google of AI centres distributed over 12 countries.
"It stands as the greatest artificial intelligence center that we are going to be investing in across the globe, excluding the United States of America," the CEO of Google Cloud said at an event in the capital city of Delhi on Tuesday, adding that the investment will be allocated over the next five years.
The announcement occurs when American President Donald Trump has been encouraging companies from the United States to give priority to investments within the country.
The Expanding Position of India in AI Computing
The country has emerged as a major hub for AI data centres. The nation's affordable data pricing and rapidly growing online population have turned it into a focal point for AI and cloud growth for major tech firms.
"The infrastructure will bring our cutting-edge technology to companies and individuals in the nation, enhancing artificial intelligence advancement and stimulating expansion across the country," commented Alphabet's chief executive Sundar Pichai.
Initiative Particulars
A definitive arrangement to complete the initiative is set to be signed this Tuesday, local government officials announced.
"This represents a massive leap for our state's technological advancement, innovation, and global standing," remarked the state's technology minister Minister Nara Lokesh.
This initiative will integrate computing and artificial intelligence facilities with renewable energy systems and an broader fiber-optic system.
Data Infrastructure Plans
The venture is part of the local administration's blueprint to establish six gigawatts of computing facility capacity by 2029.
Data centers are actual buildings that contain the computer and network hardware that companies use to gather, analyze, save, and share information.
These include servers, storage systems and connectivity devices like firewalls and routers, in addition to the required energy and climate management infrastructure to function properly.
Funding Benefits
In Andhra Pradesh, the local administration has been providing subsidised land and power to draw worldwide funders.
Market Development
The country's computing facility market has expanded quickly over the past five years, exceeding the 1GW capacity mark in 2024 and approximately tripling its 2019 capacity.
