French Snail Farm Reports Theft of €90K Worth of Escargot

Cleared Storage at Snail Farm Following Major Robbery

Burglars made off with snails worth €90,000 from a producer in the north of France that supplies gourmet restaurants.

L'Escargot Des Grands Crus in Bouzy, close to Reims, stated that its entire inventory of both fresh and frozen snails was stolen—a “real blow” just ahead of the holiday season.

The thieves broke into the property during the night leading to Monday, cutting a perimeter fence before accessing storage facilities.

Law enforcement received a complaint days after the incident, and officers are currently pursuing leads.

Meanwhile, the business is striving to restock to meet end-of-year demand from customers.

Escargot: A Traditional French Gourmet Treat

Edible snails are regarded as a culinary specialty in France, typically cooked in garlic butter or white wine before being extracted from their shells.

Producers in France often see a increase in demand around the month of December, as people indulge with the dish for Christmas and New Year's Day festivities.

“This is definitely not the type of announcement we thought we’d share as the festive season approach,” L'Escargot Des Grands Crus stated in a statement announcing the theft.

They continued to characterize the robbery as “a shock, an incomprehension, and a serious setback to the entire staff,” adding, “We are doing everything possible to restock our supplies to meet the needs of our clients for the festive period.”

Consequences of the Robbery

Images taken following the burglary reveal shelves and refrigerators nearly completely emptied of snail products.

“An entire section of prepared goods was stolen from the store, and unprocessed inventory from my production area,” Jean-Mathieu Dauvergne commented.

“This represented my holiday season inventory… We had just the right amount to manage the festive season without any worries.”

This producer has previously supplied establishments such as Michelin-starred restaurants in the region, as well as delicatessens and individual customers.

At present, the business is working hard to recovering and ensuring that holiday orders can still be fulfilled despite the significant loss.
